As part of an ongoing phased refurbishment, Queensgate Shopping Centre has taken the opportunity to modernise both their lighting and the way it’s controlled. Working closely with the project team, GLS designed and delivered a scalable lighting control solution using Dynalite technology—ensuring flexibility, energy efficiency, and full integration with the building management system (BMS).
With a variety of spaces—ranging from windowless corridors to fully glazed atriums, and from functional back-of-house zones to colour-changing facade lighting—the control system needed to adapt to contrasting lighting demands while being scalable enough to roll out zone-by-zone across the site.
Smart Design, Seamless Integration
A key design challenge was the sheer scale of the building. DALI communications are typically limited to cable runs of 300m—something quickly exceeded in Queensgate’s long corridors. Dynalite’s Dynet protocol solved this, allowing for communication over 1km of cable, enabling DALI controllers and sensors to be distributed effectively without compromising performance or reliability.
To maximise energy savings, luminaires are individually addressable via DALI, with daylight sensors installed across glazed areas. These automatically adjust brightness levels in response to natural light, reducing energy use without impacting the shopping experience.
The system also includes a BACnet Gateway, enabling seamless integration between the Dynalite lighting controls and the building’s BMS. This smart setup allows the building management team to drive lighting scenes based on timed events, adjust schedules from a central point, and access quick override options—all fully synchronised with other building systems.
